Accessibility statement

What this statement covers

This accessibility statement covers content available on the teach-in-further-education.campaign.gov.uk website as required by the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. This website is run by the Department for Education.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use our websites. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • Zoom in and out without the text spilling off the screen
  • Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS and NVDA)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as we can to understand (given the technical nature of the content).

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible is our website

The website is text based and most content is fully accessible.
Some content is not fully accessible:

  • Placeholder text in form fields is not persistent.
  • Some elements of the site have insufficient colour contrast

See the technical section below for a more comprehensive description and details of mitigations and adjustments we have made.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The Department for Education is committed to making sure our online services are accessible to all users and comply with level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines – WCAG 2.1, in line with The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

In order to help us achieve and maintain our objective we have commissioned dxw to carry out automated and manual testing and WCAG 2.1 AA level technical compliance audits.

We selected the sample of pages to test based on typical examples of our website templates and third-party services.

Our last audit was in September 2022.

Compliance status

Our websites are partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

A recent accessibility audit has highlighted the following areas for improvement, and we will endeavour to fix the issues listed as soon as possible. The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Placeholder text in form fields is not persistent.

Users may find that placeholder text in form fields disappears when typing in a value. Placeholder text should not be the only visible label for a form field, as this disappears when a user types text into the field and therefore is no longer visible.

Some elements of the site have insufficient colour contrast

Some elements on the site do not meet colour contract requirements. Further details below:

  • Links with white text on a light brown background have insufficient colour contrast.
  • Links with white text on a light blue background have insufficient colour contrast.
  • Links with white text on a light red background have insufficient colour contrast.
  • Links with white text on a light green background have insufficient colour contrast.
  • Red error text on white background.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

Placeholder text in form fields is not persistent.

We are working with our development team to find a solution to this issue.

Some elements of the site have insufficient colour contrast

We are working with our development team to ensure all areas of the site meet WCAG2.1AA guidelines relating to colour contrast.
